Am I be ready for the Advanced Doula Training?
If you have completed a DONA-approved Birth Doula Training and attended at least 25 births as a doula, you are ready to join us at our Advanced Doula Training.
You will benefit most from our workshop if you have also worked with VBAC clients, women with high risk health conditions, and attended a few cesarean births.
Ultimately, the focus of your doula work is on the family’s birth goals.
We use pre-course questionnaires, videos, supplementary literature, and role-play scenarios to enhance communication and teach practical skills.
Day 1 – 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Every training is modified for each class. We make adjustments based on the students’ experiences described in their questionnaires and our in-depth knowledge and experience of home birth.
The evening session is an exploration of the doula’s feelings, experiences, and concerns with home birth.
Day 2 – 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM
This class is designed to enhance your skills in community based birth. We assist you to recognize various communication styles and understand their impact on team work.
You and your classmates explore the differences and similarities of community birth and institutional birth. Emphasis is placed on the importance of appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical support of birthing families regardless of their selected birth space.
We use videos and scenarios to cover a broad spectrum of home birth situations. You learn how to support women and their partners in coping with both complicated and uncomplicated labors at home. Skills necessary to handle unexpected hospital transfers are covered as well.
Guest speakers may include doulas from the community experienced in home birth to share their thoughts, experiences and best practices.
Your class will be personalized based upon your questionnaire and that of your classmates.
